Twin Mattress Dimensions: Size, Fit & Best Uses
A twin mattress measures 38 inches wide by 75 inches long (about 96.5 cm x 190.5 cm), or roughly 3 feet 2 inches by 6 feet 3 inches. It is the smallest of the standard adult mattress sizes, and it is the size used in almost every bunk bed, daybed, and trundle sold in the United States. If the sleeper is under about 6 feet tall and sleeping alone, a twin fits.

Width and length are standardized across the industry. Height is not. Twin mattresses commonly run anywhere from about 8 inches to 14 inches thick depending on the model, and that number matters more on a twin than on any other size, because bunk beds and captain's beds often set a maximum mattress height for safety or drawer clearance. Check that spec before you shop.
Twin vs. Twin XL: Five Inches Is the Whole Story
These two sizes are the same width and differ only in length. A twin is 38 x 75. A twin XL is 38 x 80 — five inches longer, the same length as a queen or king.

Five inches sounds trivial and is not. A sleeper who is 6 feet tall has three inches of clearance on a twin before their feet reach the edge, and most people want more than that once a pillow pushes them down the bed. As a practical cutoff: under 5'10", a twin is comfortable; above 6 feet, look at twin XL instead. Growing teenagers are the classic case for buying the XL early rather than replacing the bed in two years.
The other difference is compatibility. Bunk beds, daybeds, and trundles are almost always built for a regular twin, so an XL will overhang the frame. Adjustable bases and split king setups, on the other hand, are built around twin XL — two twin XLs side by side make a split king.
Who a Twin Mattress Actually Fits
- Children and younger teens. The standard step up from a toddler bed, and a size most kids stay in until they hit a growth spurt.
- Bunk beds and loft beds. Nearly all are sized 38 x 75. Confirm the frame's maximum mattress thickness, which is often 6 to 8 inches on the top bunk so the guardrail still does its job.
- Daybeds and trundles. Both are designed around twin dimensions, which is what lets a daybed pass as a sofa during the day.
- Guest rooms and home offices. Two twins fit where one queen will not, and they let you host two people who do not want to share a bed.
- Studios and small apartments. At 20 square feet, a twin frees up floor space that a full at 54 x 75 would eat.
A twin is not a good fit for two people. At 38 inches of width, it gives each of two sleepers 19 inches — less than half the 30 inches a queen provides per person. Couples should be looking at full at minimum, and realistically queen.
How Much Room Does a Twin Bed Need?
The mattress footprint is 3'2" x 6'3", and a frame typically adds two to four inches on each side. A useful rule is to leave about 24 inches of walking clearance on any side you use, plus clearance for the door and for dresser drawers to open fully.
- 7 ft x 10 ft is a workable minimum for one twin with a nightstand and a walking path on one side.
- 9 ft x 10 ft is comfortable for one twin with clearance on both sides.
- 10 ft x 10 ft is roughly what you need for two twins with a shared nightstand between them — plan on 20 to 30 inches of gap so the nightstand fits and nobody climbs over a bed to get out.
Twins are also the easiest size to deliver. A 75-inch mattress turns corners and clears stairwell landings that defeat a queen or king, which is worth knowing if you are furnishing a walk-up or a room at the end of a tight hallway.
Frames, Foundations, and Bedding
Twin platforms, metal frames, and foundations are all sized 38 x 75. Two things to check before you buy:
- Slat spacing. Foam and hybrid mattresses generally want slats no more than about 3 inches apart, or a solid platform, to avoid sagging between supports. Older frames built for innersprings often have wider gaps.
- Bunk bed height limits. Measure the guardrail height above the sleeping surface and subtract your mattress thickness. Manufacturers usually publish a maximum.
Twin sheets are cut for a 38 x 75 mattress and will not stay put on a twin XL — a twin XL fitted sheet is the same width but five inches longer. Check pocket depth against your mattress profile, especially if you add a topper or a thick mattress protector. Pillows need no special size: a standard pillow is 20 x 26 inches, and one fits a twin comfortably.
