Split King Sheets: Sizes, Fit, and What to Buy
Split king sheets are sheet sets built for a bed made of two separate twin XL mattresses sitting side by side. Instead of one king fitted sheet, you get two twin XL fitted sheets — one for each half, each cut for a 38" x 80" mattress — usually paired with a single king-size flat sheet and two king pillowcases that go over both halves. That split is the whole point: each side has to move, flex, or lift independently, and one big fitted sheet stretched across both would fight it.
If you have just bought a split king or a pair of adjustable bases, here is what actually matters when you go to buy sheets for it.
What a split king sheet set includes
Composition varies by brand, but a set sold as "split king" almost always contains:
- Two fitted sheets, twin XL size (38" x 80" each) — one per mattress half.
- One flat sheet cut to king dimensions — it drapes over both halves as a single piece.
- Two king pillowcases.
Some sets skip the flat sheet entirely, which is worth checking before you order; others sell the two fitted sheets alone as a "split king fitted sheet set." If you raise one side at night, the flat sheet is the piece most likely to slide off — plenty of split king owners drop it and use a duvet instead.
What size are split king sheets?
A split king mattress is two twin XLs pushed together, so the overall footprint is 76" x 80" — identical to a standard king. The sheets are what differ.
| Piece | Size it's cut for |
|---|---|
| Fitted sheet (x2) | 38" x 80" — twin XL |
| Flat sheet | King (covers the full 76" x 80" surface) |
| Pillowcases (x2) | King |
| Duvet or comforter | King |
That is the short answer to the question most people are really asking: the fitted sheets are twin XL, and everything that lies on top is king.
Split California king is a different size
Worth flagging, because it trips people up. A split California king is two 36" x 84" halves, not two twin XLs. Those halves are two inches narrower and four inches longer than a twin XL, so twin XL fitted sheets will not fit them properly. If your bed is a split cal king, you need sheets labeled specifically for that size.
Can you use regular king sheets on a split king?
Partly. The flat sheet, the duvet, the comforter, and the pillowcases from a king set all work fine — they are meant to cover the whole surface anyway.
The king fitted sheet is the one that does not work. It is a single 76" x 80" pocket, so it binds the two mattresses together as though they were one. On a static foundation you might get away with it, though the halves will drift apart and the sheet will wrinkle into the gap. On adjustable bases it fails quickly: the moment one side inclines, the sheet stretches across the rising edge, and the corners pop off the opposite mattress. That is the single most common complaint we hear from people who tried to keep their old king bedding.
Are split king sheets the same as twin XL sheets?
For the fitted sheets, essentially yes. Two twin XL fitted sheets will fit a split king exactly the same way a split king set's fitted sheets do, and buying them separately is a perfectly reasonable route — especially if you and your partner want different materials, or if one of you sleeps hot and wants percale while the other prefers sateen.
What you lose by buying two twin XL sets instead of one split king set is the king-size top layer. A twin XL set comes with a twin XL flat sheet and a standard pillowcase, so you would end up with two narrow flat sheets that leave a visible line down the middle. Buy one split king sheet set if you want the bed to read as a single bed; buy two twin XL sets if you want the two sides genuinely independent.
Split king vs. split top king sheets
These two names get used interchangeably online, and they are not the same product.
- Split king sheets — two fully separate twin XL fitted sheets, for a bed with two completely separate mattresses.
- Split top king sheets (also sold as split head or flex top) — one fitted sheet cut for a 76" x 80" king mattress, with a vertical split running partway down from the head end. They are made for flex-top mattresses, which are a single piece at the foot and divided only at the head.
If your bed is two separate twin XLs, split top sheets will not work — the foot end is one solid piece and cannot span two mattresses that pull apart. Check which bed you actually own before ordering, because these sets are rarely returnable once opened.
Measure your pocket depth before you buy
Fitted sheets are sized by width and length, but the number that determines whether they actually stay on is pocket depth — how far the sheet wraps down the side of the mattress.
Measure from the top surface of your mattress straight down to where it meets the base, then add the thickness of anything you layer on:
- A mattress protector adds a small amount, usually a fraction of an inch.
- A topper adds its full thickness — two to four inches is typical.
Buy a pocket depth at least an inch or two greater than that total. Too shallow and the corners ride up every time the base articulates; far too deep and the excess fabric bunches underneath you. Thick hybrid mattresses are the usual culprit.
Keeping sheets put on an adjustable base
An adjustable base is harder on bedding than a flat foundation, because every incline pulls the fitted sheet toward the center of the bend. A few things help:
- Deep-pocket fitted sheets with elastic all the way around, not just at the corners. All-around elastic is the single biggest predictor of a sheet staying put.
- Sheet straps or suspenders clipped under the mattress. Cheap, and they solve most cases.
- Making the bed with the base flat, then raising it — tucking sheets while the head is up leaves slack in the wrong places.
If you are still shopping for the base itself, our split king adjustable bases are sold as matched pairs, which keeps the two halves at the same height — a mismatch of even an inch makes bedding sit unevenly.
Frequently asked questions
What size sheets do I need for a split king?
Two twin XL fitted sheets, 38" x 80" each, plus king-size flat sheets, pillowcases, and duvet. A set sold as "split king" packages exactly that.
Do twin XL sheets fit a split king?
Yes — each half of a split king is a twin XL mattress, so twin XL fitted sheets fit it precisely. You will just need a king flat sheet or duvet on top if you want an unbroken look across the bed.
Can you use twin sheets on a split king?
No. A standard twin is 38" x 75", five inches shorter than a twin XL. The sheet will either refuse to reach the corners or pull off during the night.
How do you change sheets on a split king adjustable bed?
Lower both sides flat first, then do one half at a time. Raising the head section of the half you are not working on gives you room to lift the other mattress corner — it is easier than wrestling both at once. If your bases have a wall-hugging or lift feature, using it to raise the whole platform saves your back.
Are split king and split top king the same thing?
No. Split king means two separate fitted sheets for two separate twin XL mattresses. Split top king means one fitted sheet for a single king mattress that is divided only at the head end. They are not interchangeable.
See a split king made up in person
A split king is one of those beds that makes far more sense once you have seen it put together — the gap, the seam, how the sheets behave when one side rises. Come by our Glendale showroom and we will raise a side for you and show you how the bedding sits. We serve greater Los Angeles, including Burbank, Pasadena, and the surrounding area.
If you are still choosing the mattress itself, our split king mattress guide covers the size and who it suits. Every mattress we sell comes with a 120-night sleep trial, and we include free delivery and setup across LA, so your split king arrives assembled on its bases rather than in two boxes on the driveway.
