Full XL is a different size
A full XL measures 54 by 80 inches — the same width as a full, with five extra inches of length that match a queen. It is much less common, so frames, foundations, and sheets in that size are harder to find. If you like the width of a full but need the length, check availability on every component before committing.
Is a Full Big Enough for Two People?
It depends on how much space each of you wants. A full gives two adults 27 inches of width each. For comparison, a standard twin mattress is 38 inches wide — so two people on a full each have less room than one person sleeping alone on a twin.
That works for some couples and not others. A full tends to be comfortable for two when:
- Both sleepers are under about 5'10" and sleep on their sides or curled up.
- You already sleep close together and do not shift positions much.
- The bed is for a guest room or a second home where it is used occasionally.
- The room genuinely cannot fit a queen with usable walking clearance.

What Room Size Do You Need for a Full Bed?
The mattress occupies 4.5 by 6.25 feet, and a frame or upholstered platform usually adds a few inches on each side. A practical rule is to leave 24 to 30 inches of walking clearance on any side of the bed you use, plus enough space for the door and dresser drawers to open all the way.
Working from that:
- 10 ft x 10 ft is comfortable for a full with a nightstand on one or both sides and room to walk at the foot.
- 9 ft x 9 ft works if the bed is against a wall or centered with one nightstand.
- 8 ft x 10 ft is about the practical minimum, and it is where a full genuinely beats a queen — a queen in that room leaves very little floor left.

Full is a standard size across the supply chain, so components are easy to find:
- Frames and platforms are sized 54 x 75. A full frame will not fit a full XL, and vice versa.
- Foundations and box springs come in full as a single piece. Whether you need one depends on your frame — a slatted platform with slats spaced a few inches apart generally does not require a foundation, while a traditional frame with only rails does.
