5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Mattress
Nobody wakes up one morning and thinks, "Today my mattress officially died." It's gradual — so gradual that most people sleep on a worn-out mattress for years without realizing it's the reason they feel stiff, tired, or achy. Here are five clear signs it's time for a new one.
1. You Wake Up Sore (But Weren't When You Went to Bed)
This is the most common sign. If you consistently wake up with lower back pain, stiff shoulders, or hip soreness that fades after you've been up for an hour, your mattress is the likely culprit. Over time, the foam and padding layers compress and lose their ability to support your body's pressure points. Your spine falls out of alignment, and your muscles work overtime to compensate while you sleep.
A quick test: if you sleep better at a hotel or a friend's house, your mattress at home is almost certainly the problem.
2. You Can See or Feel a Body Impression
Lie on your mattress, then get up and look at it from the side. If you can see a visible dip where you usually sleep — or if the mattress feels noticeably different in your "spot" versus the unused edges — the support layers have broken down. A sag of 1-1.5 inches or more means the mattress can no longer maintain proper spinal alignment. No mattress topper will fix structural breakdown in the core.
3. It's Over 7-8 Years Old
Most mattresses are designed to last 7-10 years, depending on the materials and how well they've been maintained. If yours is pushing past that window, it's lost a significant portion of its original support and comfort — even if it doesn't look worn out on the surface. Foam degrades over time. Springs lose tension. The fire-retardant barrier and cover fabric break down. It's just physics.
If you can't remember when you bought your mattress, that's usually a sign it's been too long.
4. Your Allergies Have Gotten Worse
Over the years, mattresses accumulate dust mites, dead skin cells, body oils, and other allergens — even with regular sheet washing and a mattress protector. If you've noticed increased sneezing, congestion, or itchy eyes when you wake up, your mattress could be contributing. An older mattress can contain millions of dust mites. If your symptoms are worse in bed than elsewhere in your home, it's worth considering a replacement along with adding a quality mattress protector to your new bed.
5. You Toss and Turn More Than You Used To
When a mattress loses its comfort layers, your body subconsciously shifts throughout the night trying to find a comfortable position. You might not fully wake up, but the constant movement prevents you from reaching deep, restorative sleep stages. If your sleep tracker shows restless nights, or your partner mentions you've been moving more, the mattress is worth investigating.
